What a home charger really costs

Most homes pay between £850 and £1,100 for a smart charger fitted by an accredited electrician. The price only climbs when the cable has a long way to travel or your fuse box needs work.

Renting, or living in a flat? A government grant still pays 75% of the cost, up to £500, until 31 March 2027.

Charging at home costs pennies a mile

On an overnight EV tariff, a typical electric car costs around 2.3p a mile to run — about a tenth of petrol. A home charger is what unlocks those rates.

Common questions

How much does it cost to install a home EV charger?
Most homes pay £850–£1,100 for a smart charger fitted by an accredited electrician (the median published price is £949). Long cable runs, groundworks or a new fuse board add to that. See every cost.
How long does installation take?
A standard installation takes around half a day on site. From your first enquiry it usually takes two to six weeks, depending on the installer and whether your network operator needs to upgrade your supply.
Can I get a grant?
If you rent, own a flat with private parking, or park on the street and use a council-approved cross-pavement channel, a government grant pays 75% of the cost up to £500 until 31 March 2027. Homeowners with a driveway are not eligible. Check the grants.
Do I need a smart charger?
Yes — all new home chargers sold in Great Britain have to be smart. To get the cheapest EV tariffs, check your charger (or car) works with the tariff you want. Compare the best chargers.
Can I just use a three-pin plug?
For occasional top-ups, yes, but it is slow and not designed for nightly use. A wall charger is around three times faster and safer for regular charging. Charging from a 3-pin plug.
