Tesla Wall Connector review

The Tesla Wall Connector Gen 3 is a cheap, long-cabled charger that works with any Type 2 EV. Most UK homes will also need an external PEN-fault device, and it has no charger-level Intelligent Octopus Go or solar mode, so it is a better fit for Tesla owners than for anyone else.

4.2out of 10How we score

A low-price, long-cable charger that suits Tesla owners, but it lacks built-in PEN protection, charger-level Intelligent Octopus Go and any solar mode, so most buyers should choose something else.

The Tesla Wall Connector Gen 3 is a tethered charger with a 7.3m cable, sold by Tesla for a low unit price and usable by any Type 2 EV. It is a good-value unit for Tesla owners who want a long lead and a manufacturer name on the wall. For almost everyone else the real cost is higher than the sticker, because it lacks built-in PEN protection, has no charger-level Intelligent Octopus Go (IOG) support, and offers no solar mode.

Price and what’s included

Tesla’s UK shop and Amazon UK (sold by Amazon) both list the unit at £475. Tesla sells the unit only; installation is arranged separately through Tesla Certified Installers. We could not open Tesla’s own shop page directly because of bot blocking, so that price comes from a crawl and matches Amazon.

No named installer publishes an all-in figure. The nearest is Mr Charger, a Tesla-approved partner, whose standard installation from £949 includes the external PEN-fault device but excludes the unit. Add the unit and that is about £1,424, our arithmetic. What Car?’s “from £475 fitted” appears to be the unit price only. The Tesla warranty is 48 months from invoice for residential use, and 12 months for commercial use. Our installation cost guide shows what a typical job costs without the PEN device.

Where to buy (prices seen on 10 October 2026, and they can change):

  • Tesla UK shop: £475, unit only
  • Amazon UK: £475, sold and dispatched by Amazon
  • Smart Home Charge: £474 charger only; installation quoted
  • Mr Charger: Tesla-approved partner; install from £949 incl. PEN device, excl. charger
  • Elecology: Tesla-approved installer; unit £445 with partner discount

Smart features and tariffs

The Wall Connector is commissioned by the installer in the Tesla One app and used through the Tesla app, with scheduling available to all cars. The weak spots are tariffs and solar. Octopus lists the Wall Connector as not available for IOG at 7.4 to 22kW. A Tesla can join IOG through the car instead; see Octopus’s Tesla sign-up guide and our Intelligent Octopus Go explainer. Tesla’s UK support page and install manual advertise no solar surplus mode.

Load management is better. Power Sharing links up to six Wall Connectors (one leader and five followers). Whole-home Dynamic Power Management needs a Tesla Remote Meter or Neurio meter with CT clamps, sold separately, and is supported for a single Wall Connector. The unit has “earth assurance” monitoring of earth impedance, access control (Tesla vehicles only) and over-the-air updates over 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, with no 4G. Tesla does not advertise OCPP, though the UK manual mentions an OCPP setting in its troubleshooting table.

Installation and safety

The unit does have a Type A RCD function (AC trip at 20mA) with 6mA DC detection, so a Type B RCD is not required. It is IP55 and IK08. One unit covers both supply types: 7.4kW at 32A single-phase, or up to 22.1kW on 400V three-phase, vehicle permitting. Our 7kW versus 22kW guide says when a three-phase supply is worth it. The unit measures 345 x 155 x 110mm and weighs 6.8kg including wirebox and cable.

What owners report

There is no UK brand-level owner survey for Tesla in our sources, so evidence is thinner here than for most chargers. A What Car? staff member running a third-generation unit likes the always-attached 7.3m cable but finds winding it back around the unit fiddly and untidy. Any modern EV can use it, and updates arrive over home Wi-Fi. Smart Home Charge notes that cost tracking works only for Tesla vehicles, and non-Tesla users get a single schedule.

Most complaints come from the Tesla Motors Club forum, which is largely North American. Firmware 25.34.1 (October 2025) made Wall Connectors ignore their own schedules until 25.42.0 fixed it. The reports come mostly from North American owners on the same Gen 3 firmware, and UK impact is not separately confirmed. Other threads describe the unit showing offline in the app while still charging, and Wi-Fi set-up working only on 2.4GHz and older WPA2 networks without a recent update. One UK owner on Intelligent Octopus linked an offline status to a PEN-fault device false-tripping.

What we like

  • Low unit price from Tesla or Amazon
  • Long 7.3m tethered cable
  • One unit covers 7.4kW single-phase and 22kW three-phase
  • Four-year residential warranty
  • Works with non-Tesla EVs; Type A RCD function and 6mA DC detection
  • Power Sharing across up to six units

What to weigh up

  • No built-in PEN protection: most UK homes need an external device
  • No charger-level Intelligent Octopus Go and no solar mode
  • Tethered only, with the cable wound around the unit
  • Wi-Fi only (2.4GHz), no 4G
  • Cost tracking limited to Tesla cars; one schedule for others
  • Heavy and large at 6.8kg

How it compares

If your Tesla is on IOG through the car, the charger’s lack of integration matters less, but you still pay for the PEN device. The Ohme Home Pro and the Hypervolt Home 3 Pro both build in PEN protection, so their installed prices are the better comparison for most homes.

Our verdict

We score the Tesla Wall Connector 4.2 out of 10. It earns 6.5 for warranty and 5.5 for flexibility, but only 2.7 for smart features, 5.1 for safety (no PEN protection) and 2.3 for fitted price once the external device is included. Reliability is 5.1 on thin evidence. Buy it if you drive a Tesla, want the long cable and a uniform look, and your installer quotes the PEN device clearly. If you are on IOG or have solar, choose an Ohme, a Hypervolt or a zappi instead. The best home EV chargers roundup lists them.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to install a Tesla charger?
Tesla sells the unit only; installation is arranged separately through Tesla Certified Installers. The only published installer figure we found is Mr Charger's standard installation, which includes the external PEN-fault device that most UK homes need but excludes the unit. See the price section above for the numbers.
Can any EV use a Tesla Wall Connector?
Any EV with a Type 2 inlet can charge from it, and any modern EV can schedule charging through the Tesla app. Tesla owners get extras such as the charge-port button on the handle, cost tracking and access control. Non-Tesla users get a single schedule and no cost tracking.
Does the Tesla Wall Connector need an earth rod?
It has no built-in PEN protection. Tesla's UK manual says most UK TN-C-S (PME) homes will need an external PEN-fault detection device to BS 7671, and that a dedicated earth rod is generally not practical. Installers add the device to the quote. Our PEN fault and earthing guide explains why.
Is the Tesla Wall Connector waterproof?
It is rated IP55 (dust and water-jet protection) and IK08 for impact. That is fine for a normal outdoor wall, but a step below the IP66 and IK10 of the Hypervolt Home 3 Pro.
Does the Tesla Wall Connector work with Intelligent Octopus Go?
Not at charger level: Octopus lists the Wall Connector as not available. A Tesla car can connect to Intelligent Octopus Go directly instead, using Octopus's Tesla sign-up route, and then the charger just supplies power.
How do I charge a Tesla at home without a Wall Connector?
Fit any Type 2 home charger. Tesla's own charger is not required, and a charger with Intelligent Octopus Go support such as an Ohme can be a better partner, with the Tesla itself linked to the tariff as normal.
